The sun is shining in Cape Town this week and we are dreaming of hot beach days and icy cold drinks…
“I was once hitch hiking to Victoria Falls and a local who took me the last bit of the way was very cool indeed. As I got out of his car, he said to me, “Life is like a very long and wonderful book, and if you only stay in one place then you are only reading one page.”
Nic, Steadfast Africa
Where in the world have you felt happiest?
I’ve always loved India. Crowded cricket stadiums, empty Mumbai streets at 4 am, hot beaches or cold mountains. I could never resist India’s flavours and gentle people – I went there around 30 times in ten years.
Describe a place that most lived up to the hype?
Hype, overpricing and anticlimax go hand in hand… I suppose the Taj Mahal really took my breath away but it was only on my third visit to Agra that I got round to buying a ticket to go inside!
Who is the most interesting person you’ve met on your travels?
I was once hitch hiking to Victoria Falls and a local who took me the last bit of the way was very cool indeed. As I got out of his car, he said to me, “Life is like a very long and wonderful book, and if you only stay in one place then you are only reading one page. I’m addicted to befriending everyone – especially our interesting clients over the past year or two.
Describe your favourite view.
From our beach house in Simon’s Town, over False Bay and the beautiful Whale Song garden where so many penguins live. Happy place. Table Mountain from our office ain’t bad either!
Which is your favourite city, and why?
Cape Town, obvs. Mountain, sea, wine, nature, food, drink, vibe. Easy!
‘I lost my heart in…’
I mean the Caribbean is pretty nice and the Irish are the best, but I always knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life in Cape Town.
STEADFAST: resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering. “steadfast loyalty”. Steadfast Africa will be here when travel reopens and adventures begin… We cannot wait to dream with you.
