A bucket-list and adrenaline-rush must – the mighty Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is one of the few places that truly lives up to its reputation, and its name. Set on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, the “Smoke That Thunders” (Mosi-oa-tunya in local language) is an iconic natural wonder and much more than just a spectacular sight – it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a marvel of Mother Nature in fullflow. It’s also an ideal starting, or end point for an adventure-filled and scenery-rich African safari and travel experience. For travellers seeking seamless comfort, unforgettable wildlife encounters, and a touch of adventure, Victoria Falls offers it all.

When is the best time to venture there?

There’s no wrong time to visit – rather different experiences to enjoy depending on the season. If you’re drawn to dramatic scenery, February to May is when the falls are at their most powerful. The Zambezi River is in full flow, and the thunder of cascading water creates a truly awe-inspiring atmosphere.

For those who prefer adventure and clearer views, the drier months from August to December are ideal. This is the best time for experiences such as swimming in the famous Devil’s Pool, white-water rafting through the Zambezi Gorge, and enjoying unobstructed panoramic views of the falls from both Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The logistics – getting there seamlessly and in style

Victoria Falls is blissfully easy to reach. Most international guests arrive via Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA), with direct flights from key hubs including Johannesburg and Cape Town. From there, the journey is effortless and many luxury safari lodges and hotels offer private transfers, ensuring your African adventure begins in comfort from the moment you arrive.

For most nationalities, visas can be obtained on arrival. We highly recommend the KAZA Uni-Visa, available for around USD $50. This allows multiple entries between Zimbabwe and Zambia for up to 30 days, as well as day trips into Botswana – which is ideal for guests combining Victoria Falls with a safari in nearby Chobe National Park. A passport valid for at least six months, with two blank pages, is required.

Signature Victoria Falls experiences

A guided walk through Victoria Falls National Park is an essential part of your stay. Stroll along rainforest pathways to carefully positioned viewpoints overlooking the Main Falls and dramatic gorges. With an expert guide, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the geology, history, and cultural importance of this remarkable place.

Known as an adventure hub, Victoria Falls offers heart-racing experiences for those who seek them. Take the plunge with a bungee jump from the historic Victoria Falls Bridge, navigate world-renowned white-water rapids on the Zambezi River (seasonal), or enjoy a scenic helicopter or microlight flight – often called the ‘Flight of Angels’ – for incredible aerial views.

Where landscapes, wildlife and river converge

Wildlife encounters are never far away. A sunset cruise on the Zambezi River is a guest favourite, and a way for those less inclined to living on the edge to enjoy the river. It offers relaxed game viewing from the water as elephants, hippos, and crocodiles gather along the banks. For a true safari experience, explore Zambezi National Park, located just minutes from Victoria Falls, or enjoy a full-day excursion to Chobe National Park in Botswana, renowned for its large elephant herds and exceptional game viewing.

Quintessentially African

Victoria Falls is more than a stop on the map – it’s a place where safari travel, history and scenery come to life, made all the more special by its famously warm and welcoming people. Whether paired with a private wildlife reserve, a riverfront retreat, or an exclusive safari circuit, this destination offers a perfect balance of adventure, culture and natural beauty.
