Tongabezi Lodge, Zambia | 2025

1. What kind of traveller would this property suit?
Tongabezi is well-suited to a wide range of travellers, including honeymooners seeking privacy and romance, couples looking for a peaceful retreat, and families or multigenerational groups, thanks to its flexible accommodation options. Its calm
atmosphere also makes it ideal for guests wanting a more tranquil alternative to the busier Victoria Falls area.

2. What in your opinion are some of the most standout/impressive features about the property?
The property’s riverside setting on the Zambezi is exceptional, offering a sense of space and serenity. The accommodation is a real highlight, particularly the unique houses – such as the Nuthouse. The lodge offers highly personalised service, with each room assigned a dedicated host known as a Vista. The lodge also benefits from two pools, including a lap pool and a smaller pool, a well-equipped gym, and a genuinely peaceful atmosphere.

3. What is the service at the property like?
Service is warm, friendly, and personal. The staff are attentive without being intrusive, and the guiding was excellent – Brian in particular was highly knowledgeable. Dorothy, my dedicated host, was extremely organised and attentive, and Banda, the General Manager, was very present and engaged, which added to the overall sense of care and professionalism.

4. Tell us about the food (if applicable)?
Dining was enjoyable, with a very pleasant dinner and a good breakfast offering. While the food may not be the primary highlight of the lodge, it is well prepared, satisfying, and perfectly complements the overall experience.

5. How would you describe this property in a few sentences to someone wanting to book it?
Tongabezi is a serene, characterful lodge set on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River, offering a peaceful and intimate experience close to Victoria Falls. With beautiful accommodation, warm service, and memorable river-based activities, it’s an excellent choice for guests seeking privacy, nature, and a slower pace.

6. What activities are available to do there?
Activities include river cruises, game drives, and wildlife viewing along the Zambezi. The sunset cruise was particularly enjoyable, with informative commentary and very few other boats, and I was incredibly lucky to witness a rare wild dog sighting, adding an unexpected and truly memorable element to the overall wildlife experience. Guests can also enjoy time
relaxing at the lodge and its pools, trips into Livingstone, village and cultural tours, Victoria Falls excursions and island picnics.

7. Tell us about the journey to get to the destination – what are the logistics like in terms of travel time, transport, etc.?
Tongabezi is reached via Livingstone Airport or a transfer from the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River. The journey is straightforward, and the lodge feels conveniently located while still being far enough from Victoria Falls to offer a quieter atmosphere.

8. What do you recommend to a guest in terms of a minimum length of stay for this property?

A minimum stay of two to three nights is recommended to fully enjoy the lodge, experience the river activities, and relax into the slower rhythm of life at Tongabezi.

9. What time of year would this property be at optimal enjoyment?
Tongabezi can be enjoyed year-round, though the drier months are ideal for wildlife viewing and game drives, while higher water levels enhance the river experience and the Zambezi’s scenic beauty. I was there during the rainy season and saw a lot and enjoyed all the activities on offer.

10. What is unique about this property?
Tongabezi’s uniqueness lies in its strong sense of place, intimate atmosphere, and individually designed accommodation. Its peaceful riverside setting, exceptional guiding, and the feeling of being welcomed into a private, thoughtfully run lodge make it a truly special experience.
