There’s more to celebrate this December than just the festive season. Cape Town, ever a hub of culinary excellence, has exploded with newness to greet the year-end guests. A clutch of exciting new restaurants and bars is on the menu, with something for everyone — from fine dining to café culture.
Cape Town has long been a city that refuses to rest on its laurels, especially when it comes to food. The past few months have seen a surge of fresh openings, each one adding its own flavour to the Mother City’s dining landscape. This year, the city feels particularly invigorated – a renewed energy that pairs well with summer’s arrival and a collective appetite for celebration.
In the zone
Clustered in the hub between Bree and Kloof Streets, you’ll find a couple of chic new bars and light bite venues. Tannin, the city centre’s newest wine-forward haunt, is everything you want in a wine bar – stylish, welcoming, well stocked, with a lovely food menu. Guests can explore a thoughtful list of small-batch wines while pairing them with plates that are just as tasty.
Around the corner, Akkra at Ouzeri translates the stylish Mediterranean energy of beloved Greek Cypriot restaurant Ouzeri below into a snug and secluded cocktail and wine bar. Classically inspired and beautifully designed (the cocktails are just as beautiful), it’s a great pre of post nightcap spot. Try the deep-fried olives, thank us later.
For something lighter, Cafe Sofi steps confidently into Cape Town’s café culture. From Tasha’s founder fame, this is the bright, contemporary and beautifully unfussy spot you want to book for your weekend brunches and leisurely afternoons alike.
Hotel hotspots
Moving into hotel territory, at the Mount Nelson, Amura by Spanish Michelin-star chef Angel León (his first outside of Spain) ushers in a new era for the iconic hotel. Embracing a Mediterranean mindset, Amura’s menu is a joyful celebration of coastal abundance, underscored by the Nellie’s trademark elegance.
Not to be outdone, Curate at Ellerman House offers one of the most exclusive new dining experiences in the country. Curate is intimate, immersive and driven by a finely tuned culinary narrative — a multi-course journey shaped by the seasons, the land and the artistry of the kitchen.
One of this season’s most anticipated arrivals – taking up residence at Intercontinental Table Bay hotel – is Le Bistrot de Jan, the latest outpost by Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. True to form, the space bridges nostalgia and elegance, echoing the romance of French bistro culture.
The cool kids
Ever making a case for cosy cult culinary experiences, Farro, led by Alex and Eloise Windebank, has set up shop in Cape Town in a characterful Victorian terrace house in Gardens. With just 26 seats, a cocktail bar, open kitchen and mountain-view dining rooms, it echoes the intimacy of its earliest days. The heart of Farro is a seasonal five-course chef’s menu – simple, honest, elegant. Expect small-scale local wines, thoughtful cocktails and house-made soft drinks, always guided by integrity.
Arum at Boschendal joins one of the Cape’s most storied estates with a menu shaped by provenance, craft and organic-grown excellence. Set in the estate’s historic 1812 cellar overlooking its gardens, Arum is headed up by acclaimed chef Peter Tempelhoff, and embraces a farm-to-fire philosophy, featuring ingredients sourced from Boschendal and incorporating flame through smoke, char, or gentle grilling.
With each new opening, Cape Town doubles down on what makes it extraordinary: creativity, curiosity and a deep respect for place.
