The Diverse Beauty of Botswana

Botswana tops many travellers’ safari wish lists, and this is entirely justified. Apart from its abundance of
natural beauty, it’s demonstrated an unwavering commitment to conservation – its high-value, low-
volume tourism model, and huge percentage (relative to other countries) of land under conservation
make it a uniquely nature-oriented and wild place to visit from a safari point of view.

Approximately 40% of Botswana’s land encompasses national parks, game reserves, and wildlife
management areas. It also boasts a stable economy and democracy, making it safe as well as unspoilt
and scenic.

The country’s many terrains make it an incredibly rewarding destination to visit from a landscape and
wildlife perspective. From the iconic Okavango Delta, to the moon-like pans of the Makgadikgadi, it
spans swamps to desert from border to border – with forest, savannah and dunes in between.

One country, huge variety

Travellers can experience multiple different ecosystems in one trip to Botswana. Like the lush and life-
filled waterways of the Okavango Delta (whose sprawling grassy plains flood seasonally). This UNESCO
World Heritage Site is unlike any other place one earth and lives up to the hype. Chobe National Park is
famous for large elephant herds, as well as lions and leopards, and is Botswana’s most biologically
diverse park. Moremi Game Reserve is the oldest protected reserve in the Okavango Delta and
combines mopane woodland and floodplains, offering diverse habitats. Linyanti – wedged between
Chobe and the Delta has the best of both water and classic safari landscapes. Linyanti is also famous for
wild dog populations.

Venturing to the drier parts of the country, Central Kalahari Game Reserve’s vast arid plains are home to
unique desert-adapted species and unique wildlife, while Makgadikgadi Pans’ expansive salt pans feel
like another planet. It is one of the largest salt flats in the world and all that remains of the formerly
enormous Lake Makgadikgadi, which once covered an area larger than Switzerland, but dried up tens of
thousands of years ago.

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is characterised by unique Kalahari desert environment – red sand
dunes, sparse vegetation, and dry riverbeds – and is renowned for its exceptional game viewing
opportunities, particularly its large predators, especially black-maned lions, and the impressive herds of
antelope, like gemsbok and springbok, that thrive in these arid landscapes.

Choose your adventure

Within the wonderful scope you have in terms of landscape, there is also a lot of choice as far as the
type of experience you want to have. Due to the terrain being so varied, there are many different styles
of accommodation, lodges and camps. Lodge safaris (ranging from basic to luxe) offer ease and comfort,
while mobile safaris are a more adventurous route – with walk-in tents, camp crew, and a focus on
communing with nature.

Then we come to how to fill your days – you won’t struggle to find ways to keep busy and inspired. From
the traditional game drives that most (land-based) camps and lodges offer, to walking safari and the
intimate experience with the bush this provides, to water safaris and watching aquatic wildlife by boat
or mokoro, Botswana has it all.

Botswana is a birdwatcher’s and photographer’s paradise, with numerous species to observe and
landscapes second to none. Stargazers will delight in the clear night skies which offer exceptional astral
scenery. Historians and culture appreciators will enjoy the opportunities to engage with local
communities and learn about their traditions.
