Villa Makomo, Bishopscourt

A warm and vibrant family home, designed with comfort and style in mind, Makomo is supremely versatile and endlessly stylish.

This luxurious nine-bedroom villa is wonderfully spacious and spread widely over two levels, sleeping up to 16 guests. Located in the peaceful and treed suburb of Bishopscourt – a residential area of Cape Town – it has superb views of Table Mountain, an iconic city landmark. No expense has been spared in the design of this premium property, which features modern facilities and amenities throughout – ideal for a discerning group or family that appreciates fine living.

The setting

Bishopscourt, a prestigious residential suburb, is situated against the slopes of Table Mountain and adjacent to the world-famous Kirstenbosch Gardens – a beautiful, serene park where you can find
7 000 plant species, most of which are unique to the region. Despite its idyllic suburban location though, the city centre, and attractions like the V&A Waterfront are only a 15-minute drive away, while beaches can be reached by car in 20.

Designed in collaboration with the family by renowned South African architect Stefan Antoni in 2008, the house seamlessly blends refined design with state-of-the-art features and security (CCTV and electric fencing around the perimeter ensure your safety). The house has been thoughtfully decorated by Magda Viotti with relaxed elegance as the goal. Cosy fires, rugs and plenty of colour are elevated by a fine collection of art by Southern African artists, curated over the years.

The setup

Makomo invites the setting in at every opportunity. The hall on the ground floor opens expansively to the outdoor living and dining spaces and views, while the open-plan arrangement of living areas encourages easy flow between spaces, linking them to the garden and terraces. Inside, TV and formal lounges – which open up to the terrace – provide ample areas for relaxation. A spacious dining area, seating up to 20, is a step down from the central open-plan kitchen.

The Eastern Terrace (sunset oriented) features sculptures by Zimbabwean artist Dominic Benhura, an open fire for winter evenings and overhead fans and sun screens for summer. The terrace lounge has a full-sized table tennis table, a TV room with table football and access to the family bedroom suites, ideal for younger guests. The Western Terrace is a shady morning spot and houses a pizza oven, braai and Jacuzzi for laid-back dining and socialising. Ideal for leisurely breakfasts, post work out relaxing (this is the pool terrace) and family BBQs. A well-loved tradition at Makomo is Pizza Night.

The gardens are meticulously kept – from the vast manicured lawn ideal for games, to the lush indigenous planting featuring local Fynbos, trees and shrubs. Within the grounds you will find a tennis and basketball court and match viewing platform, a trampoline set into the lawn and a 20- metre swimming pool, which at its deepest is 4.1m, as well as a jacuzzi, steam room and outside shower.
